A Day for Girls

On March 3rd, in Japan, it’s Girls’ Day. It’s also called Doll Festival, in Japanese 雛祭り(Hinamatsuri). Formerly, Japanese people believed the dolls possessed the power to contain bad spirits. So they sent the dolls down a river to the sea, supposedly taking troubles or bad spirits with them. By doing this, they prayed for the safety of children. Lately, the custom changed into Girls’ Day and the ornamental dolls became decorations only.

Next year, we will prepare those dolls for our girl for sure. We have seven-tiered hina doll set in the storeroom, we need some space in the house to display them at that time.

  1. This is like mappi.
    Because, clothing is pink.

  2. I forgot to let you know that I spent about an hour reading about hina dolls on the web and looking at pictures after reading this post. We don’t have anything comparable in the States that I can think of. Keep up the cultural exchange!
